One year on, and I've been busy in 2008, selling in my services and working with digital businesses of all sorts and sizes. I have not blogged much, but intend to remedy this for now on. As I write, the double wammy of the credit crunch and the forecasted recession are concerning, but the digital/online sector is still young, and there is plenty of work to do. Look at the Search sector, just 12 years old, with one dominant company, the mighty Google.

It's a great time right now for Marketeers to reach consumers at competitive prices. With consumers tightening their belts and spending less, they will be spending more time on digital activities at home. It will be interesting to see which Marketeers have learnt from previous downturns, and who goes for it this time.

Now is also the time to invest to compete in the converging and competitive digital world we are in. Recession or otherwise, growing market share of online revenues is key. Online ad revenues are forecasted to overtaike the TV market in 2009 in the UK, and all web publishers will want and need to keep up in this sector.

I did run the 2008 Herts 10K for the third year running on 13th October, but I did'nt make a major bid for sponsorshp this year. Watch out for 2009.

1st October 2007 marked the start of an exciting new era, with the launch of Lucamedia.com as the website, communication and marketing device for Luca Media Limited. As the digital and online world moves inexorably towards the provision of a richer multi-media experience, I have incorporated video and the blog communication tools on this site – which reflected the current development stage of online businesses in Autumn 2007. If you have not yet explored my site, I encourage you to do so, and to get in touch either by using this blog, email, or telephone. Don’t be shy, it would be helpful to see your name, organisation and title in your blog entry.

I can’t wait to hear from you.

Many thanks, Bernadette O’Reilly

Last night I tuned into a great webinar, organised by the Click Z Network, and presented by Dave Evans, an Author on social media amongst other things. It was a very informative overview of how social media enhances the branding awareness, consideration and purchase cycle through word of mouth, and how powerful this can be in B2B and B2C markets for both positive recommendations of products and services, remembering that word of mouth can be negative too, Social Media is fulfilling Tim Berners Lee's original dream for the Internet, of a more collective, participative and less interruptive medium. He gave several examples of the type of experimental work that is taking place. The innovation is incredible, and very exciting. Before attending this, I had read a couple of negative comments regarding social media, here's a couple of examples:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/14/business/media/14digi.html?ref=business, http://www.mediaweek.co.uk/news/866193/Marketing-chiefs-play-down-value-social-networks/

It was so refreshsing to hear Dave's presentation. There is huge potential to develop business through the use of social media platforms. It needs dedicated understanding and management in it's own right, and it is very early days for this sector.

If you believe in marketing principles as I do, then marketeers will find ways to engage with consumers which will accelerate the social media marketplace rapidly over the next few years. I'm going to read his book over the Christmas/New Year holiday, so more later.
